Welcome to Miraheze Wiki Editing!

Miraheze wikis use the same software as Wikipedia (MediaWiki), so if you’ve ever edited Wikipedia, you’ll find the experience quite similar. If not, don’t worry! This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to start contributing.

Creating a New Page

 1. Search for the Page: Before creating a new page, search to make sure it doesn't already exist. Use the search box.
 2. Use a Red Link: If you search for a page that doesn’t exist, you’ll see a red link. Clicking on this link creates the new page.
 3. Manual Link: Alternatively, you can manually create a page by typing the URL directly in your browser’s address bar. Use the format https://yourwiki.miraheze.org/wiki/Page_title_here and replace Page_title_here with your desired page name.

Editing a Page

 1. Edit Button: Navigate to the page you want to edit and click the "Edit" button at the top. For sections, use the "Edit" link next to the section title.
 2. Make Your Changes: You’ll see a text box with the current content of the page. Here, you can add, remove, or modify the text.
 3. Use Wikitext: MediaWiki uses a markup language called Wikitext. For example, ==Heading== creates a section heading, * creates a bulleted list, and Link to another page creates a link.
 4. Preview and Save: Use the "Show preview" button to see how your changes look. Once satisfied, click "Save changes" to update the page.

Creating and Using Categories

Categories help organize pages and make information easier to find.

 1. Add a Page to a Category: At the bottom of a page you’re editing, add . Replace “CategoryName” with the name of the category you wish to add the page to.
 2. Create a New Category: Just like creating a new page, if the category doesn’t exist, you’ll create it by adding a page to it. Then, click on the red link to the new category to edit the category page itself. It’s good practice to add a brief description of the category.
 3. Viewing a Category: Click on a category link at the bottom of a page to view all pages within that category.

Editing Tips and Tricks

 • Bold and Italics: Use bold for bold text and italics for italic text.
 • Creating Links: Use Page Name to link to another wiki page, and Link text to link to external pages.
 • References: Add references by using , and place ==References== and <references /> at the bottom of the page to display them.
 • Talk Pages: Each article has a "Talk" page. Use it to discuss changes or improvements to the page with other editors.
